The first call came in around noon, with reports of a teenager struggling in the sea off Golden Bay. By the time rescuers reached the spot, it was too late.
Tragedy Strikes at Golden Bay
Golden Bay, a popular spot for both locals and tourists, was filled with beachgoers enjoying the summer sun. Among them was 16-year-old Matthew*, who had ventured into the sea with friends. A sudden rip current pulled him out, and despite his friends’ desperate attempts to reach him, he was soon out of their grasp. A nearby swimmer, a local resident, tried to reach him but was also pulled back by the strong current. The coastguard arrived minutes later, but Matthew was already gone.

Toddler Fights for Life After Sea Incident
Just hours later, another emergency call came in. This time, a toddler had been pulled unconscious from the sea at Marsaxlokk’s fishing village. Her parents raised the alarm when they noticed her missing, and she was found face down in the shallow water.

Safety Reminders as Summer Heats Up
These incidents serve as stark reminders of the dangers lurking in Malta’s otherwise inviting seas. Strong currents, sudden drops in depth, and unpredictable tides can catch even the most experienced swimmers off guard. The Malta Red Cross has issued a plea to the public to stay vigilant, especially when swimming with children.
“Always keep an eye on your little ones,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Red Cross. “The sea can be unpredictable, and even a moment’s distraction can have tragic consequences.”
In light of these incidents, the coastguard has also reminded the public to swim within designated areas and to obey lifeguard instructions. They have also urged anyone spotting someone in distress to call 112 immediately.
