Four Arrested in Birkirkara Burglaries Crackdown

Four Men in Custody as Police Crack Down on Birkirkara Burglaries

Early morning raids in Birkirkara today resulted in the arrest of four men suspected of carrying out a string of home burglaries across the central region. The arrests, made by the Malta Police Force’s Serious Crime Unit, have brought relief to residents who have been living in fear following a spate of break-ins over the past few months.

Burglaries on the Rise

According to police reports, the number of burglaries in Malta has been on the rise, with a significant increase in incidents in the central region, particularly in Birkirkara. The latest figures show that between January and June this year, there were over 150 reported burglaries in the area, with many more likely to have gone unreported.

Residents in Birkirkara have been on high alert, with many taking extra precautions to secure their homes. “I’ve started using a security camera and I make sure to lock all my windows even during the day,” said Maria, a long-time resident of Birkirkara. “It’s sad that we have to live like this, but it’s better to be safe.”

Police Action

In response to the increase in burglaries, the Malta Police Force has been stepping up its efforts to apprehend those responsible. Today’s arrests are the result of months of investigation, with police using CCTV footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence to identify and track down the suspects.

Superintendent Mario Azzopardi, leading the investigation, praised the community for their cooperation. “The information provided by the public has been invaluable in helping us to solve these cases. We urge anyone with information about any crime to come forward and report it to us,” he said.

Arrests and Charges

The four men, aged between 25 and 35, were arrested at their homes in Birkirkara and Msida. They are currently being held in custody pending arraignment, charged with burglary, theft, and criminal damage. Police have also seized a number of items believed to have been stolen during the burglaries, including electronics, jewelry, and cash.

Magistrate Dr. Natasha Galea Sciberras is presiding over the case, with the four men expected to appear in court later this week.
