Kirkop Scrapyard Fire Under Control After Five-Hour Battle
Smoke Clears: Kirkop Scrapyard Fire Tamed After Five-Hour Battle
As the sun began to set over Malta’s southern region, the intense blaze that had engulfed a Kirkop scrapyard for over five hours finally started to retreat. The inferno, which sent plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky and could be seen from miles away, was declared ‘brought under control’ by the Fire Services Department.
Firefighters’ Marathon Struggle
The fire at the scrapyard, located on Triq il-Kuncizzjoni, broke out around 1:30 PM on Tuesday. Firefighters from various stations, including Kirkop, Birkirkara, and Luqa, battled the blaze in sweltering heat, with temperatures soaring past 30°C. They used foam and water to tackle the flames, which were fuelled by the vast amounts of scrap metal and other flammable materials stored at the site.
At the height of the fire, as many as eight fire appliances and a water tanker were deployed. The firefighters’ marathon struggle paid off, with the Fire Services Department announcing that the fire was under control by 6:30 PM.
Evacuations and Traffic Disruptions
The intense heat and thick smoke from the fire led to the temporary evacuation of nearby homes and businesses. Residents of Triq il-Kuncizzjoni and surrounding streets were advised to keep windows closed and stay indoors to avoid potential health risks. Traffic along the busy road was also disrupted, with police diverting vehicles away from the affected area.
Dr. Charmaine Gauci, Superintendent of Public Health, reminded the public to avoid the area due to the risk of toxic fumes. “The smoke contains harmful substances that can cause respiratory irritation and other health problems,” she warned.
Environmental Concerns and Clean-Up Operations
The fire has raised serious environmental concerns. Officials from the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) are investigating the incident, with a focus on determining the cause of the fire and assessing any potential environmental impact. The ERA has warned that such fires can release toxic chemicals into the air and soil, posing a threat to both human health and the environment.
Clean-up operations at the scrapyard are expected to begin in the coming days. The Fire Services Department has warned that the site may still pose a risk, with hotspots potentially reigniting. The public is advised to stay away from the area until the clean-up is complete.
“This was a significant fire that could have been much worse,” said a spokesperson for the Fire Services Department. “We’re grateful for the public’s cooperation and the hard work of our firefighters, who worked tirelessly to bring this fire under control.”
As the smoke clears over Kirkop, the community can breathe a sigh of relief. However, the environmental impact of the fire and the cause of the blaze remain under investigation.
