Tragedy in Rio: Maltese Technician Dies Preparing Shakira’s Stage

Imagine the bustling streets of Rio de Janeiro, the sun setting over the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, and the anticipation building for a massive concert. Now, picture the stark contrast of a somber scene unfolding at the same venue, where a Maltese technician, 35-year-old Mario Azzopardi, lost his life while setting up the stage for none other than global superstar Shakira.

A Tragic Accident

Mario, a seasoned technician from Msida, Malta, was part of the crew preparing the stage at the Rock in Rio festival. According to local reports, the accident occurred on the evening of September 2nd when a metal structure collapsed, crushing Mario and another crew member, who sustained serious injuries.

Rio’s fire department confirmed the tragic incident, stating that Mario was pronounced dead at the scene. The other injured technician was rushed to Hospital São Lucas, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Shockwaves in Malta

News of Mario’s death has through Malta’s tight-knit entertainment industry and beyond. Friends and colleagues have taken to social media to express their grief and share memories of Mario, describing him as a dedicated professional and a kind-hearted individual.

“Mario was more than just a colleague. He was a friend, a brother. We’ll miss him dearly,” said Joseph Xuereb, a fellow Maltese technician who had worked alongside Mario on numerous occasions.

Malta’s Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection, Claudette Buttigieg, expressed her condolences on behalf of the Maltese government, stating that Mario’s untimely death was a tragic reminder of the risks that event workers often face.

Investigation Underway

Brazilian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Initial reports suggest that human error may have played a role in the collapse of the metal structure. However, no official cause has been determined as of yet.

In a statement, Rock in Rio’s organizers expressed their deepest sympathies to Mario’s family and friends, vowing to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.

“Our priority now is to support the families of those affected and to ensure that such an incident never happens again,” the statement read.

Remembering Mario

Mario’s body was repatriated to Malta on September 5th, where he was laid to rest following a heartfelt funeral mass at the Church of the Annunciation in Msida. Hundreds of mourners, including colleagues, friends, and family, gathered to pay their respects and celebrate Mario’s life.

“Mario was a shining example of dedication and professionalism. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten,” said Paul Xuereb, president of Malta’s Entertainment Industry Association.

In the days following Mario’s death, tributes have poured in from across the globe. From Rio to Msida, the entertainment industry has united in mourning the loss of one of its own, vowing to honor Mario’s memory by continuing to push the boundaries of live events while prioritizing safety.
