Malta Disability Claim: Navigating the Maze

Malta Disability Claim: “I Was Told to Apply, Now I’m Stuck”

Imagine this: you’re struggling with a disability, trying to of life in Malta, and you’re given advice that seems to promise a lifeline. You take it, only to find yourself entangled in a web of confusion and frustration. This is the reality for Maria, a 45-year-old Malta resident who shared her story with Hot Malta.

An Acquaintance’s Advice

Maria, who wished to keep her last name private, was advised by an acquaintance to apply for disability benefits. “I was told it was an easy process, that I’d get approved quickly,” she recalls, sitting in her small apartment in Msida. Her disability, a severe form of arthritis, makes daily tasks a challenge. She works part-time, but her medical expenses and reduced income have left her struggling to make ends meet.

Following the advice, Maria began the application process. She filled out the forms, gathered the required documents, and submitted her application. Then, she waited.

Months of Silence, Mountains of Paperwork

Months passed with no word from the authorities. Maria called, she wrote, but her queries were met with generic responses and more paperwork. “I was told I needed more medical reports, then they said my application was incomplete, then they lost my documents,” she sighs, her frustration palpable.

Maria’s story is not an isolated one. According to the National Council of Persons with Disability, many claimants face similar challenges. The council’s president, George Muscat, told Hot Malta, “The process is complex and lengthy. Many people give up before they even start, and those who do start often face delays and bureaucracy.”

Seeking Help, Finding Hope

Exasperated and overwhelmed, Maria turned to Sensationalising Disability Malta, a local NGO that provides support to individuals with disabilities. “They’ve been a lifeline,” she says, her voice filled with gratitude. “They helped me understand the process, guided me through the paperwork, and even advocated for me with the authorities.”

Sensationalising Disability Malta’s director, Claire Bonnici, believes that more support is needed for disability claimants. “The process is daunting, and many people need help navigating it. We need more resources, more awareness, and more understanding,” she says.

Maria’s story serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in Malta. It’s a call for improved processes, increased support, and greater understanding. As Maria looks to the future, she hopes her story will inspire others to seek help and not give up. “It’s a long, hard fight,” she says, “but it’s a fight worth having.”
