Scaffolding Collapse at Birkirkara Recycling Facility Injures Workers
Emergency services rushed to the Birkirkara recycling facility this morning after a scaffolding structure collapsed, injuring several workers. The incident, which occurred around 9 am, through the local community, with eyewitnesses reporting a scene of chaos and destruction.
Scene of the Accident
The scaffolding, which was being used for maintenance work at the facility, suddenly gave way, sending workers crashing to the ground. The collapse also caused a domino effect, with nearby equipment and materials being toppled over. The area was quickly cordoned off by police, and paramedics attended to the injured workers.
The recycling facility, located on Triq il-Kbira in Birkirkara, is a major hub for waste management in the central region. It’s a bustling area, with trucks constantly coming in and out, making the incident all the more alarming.
Rescue and Aftermath
Fire and rescue services worked swiftly to stabilise the scene and extract the injured workers from the debris. They were then transported to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries is not yet known, but initial reports suggest that some may be serious.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene. “I was driving by when I saw the scaffolding just come crashing down,” said one eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous. “It was like something out of a movie. I hope the workers are okay.”
Investigation Launched
Following the incident, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has launched an investigation. They will be looking into the cause of the collapse and whether any safety regulations were breached. The facility has been temporarily closed pending the outcome of the investigation.
This is not the first time that safety concerns have been raised at the Birkirkara recycling facility. In 2019, workers staged a protest over what they claimed were unsafe working conditions. The facility’s management has not yet commented on today’s incident.
