Scaffolding Collapse at Recycling Facility Injures Workers
Emergency services rushed to the scene of a scaffolding collapse at the Birkirkara recycling facility this morning, leaving several workers injured. The incident occurred around 10:30 AM, bringing operations at the plant to a sudden halt.
Scene of the Collapse
The once towering scaffold now lies in a heap of metal and wood, scattered across the yard of the recycling facility on Triq il-Kbira, Birkirkara. Neighbours reported hearing a loud crash, followed by shouts and sirens. “It was quite a scare,” said Joseph, a resident of a nearby apartment block. “We’re just glad no one was seriously hurt.”
Injuries and Rescue Operations
Five workers were injured in the incident, with two sustaining serious injuries. They were swiftly transported to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. The Malta Civil Protection Department, along with Birkirkara’s local council, quickly mobilized to secure the area and assist in rescue operations.
“We’re doing everything we can to ensure the safety of the remaining workers and the nearby residents,” said a spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department. “Our priority is to stabilize the remaining structure and prevent any further collapse.”
Investigation Underway
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. “We’re treating this as a serious incident,” said a spokesperson for the HSE. “Our inspectors are on site, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.”
In the meantime, the recycling facility remains closed, with operations suspended until further notice. The company has assured the public that they are cooperating fully with the investigation and are committed to ensuring the safety of their workers.
