Gozo’s Four-Legged Rabbit: A Tale of Resilience

Mystery of the Four-Legged Rabbit: A Tale from Gozo

Imagine, if you will, the quiet, sun-drenched streets of Għajnsielem, Gozo. The scent of Mediterranean herbs wafts through the air, and the only sound is the gentle hum of a distant boat engine. Suddenly, a local resident spots an unusual sight – a rabbit, hopping along Triq San Lawrenz, but with a twist. All four of its legs are snapped, yet it’s moving, determined, against all odds.

An Unusual Sighting

This was no ordinary rabbit. Its legs, bent at unnatural angles, should have made it immobile, yet there it was, defying the laws of nature, or so it seemed. The sighting was reported to the local animal welfare organisation, Animal Welfare Gozo, who were as baffled as the witness.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Mark Vella, a volunteer at Animal Welfare Gozo. “It’s like the rabbit is refusing to give up, despite its injuries.”

Unraveling the Mystery

The rabbit was eventually captured and taken to a local vet. Dr. Joseph Xuereb at Gozo Veterinary Clinic revealed that the rabbit’s legs weren’t snapped, but rather, it was born with a condition known as ‘rachitic deformity’, a result of a vitamin D deficiency in its mother’s diet.

“It’s not uncommon in rabbits, but it’s rare to see one surviving and moving around like this,” Dr. Xuereb explained. “Usually, they’re unable to move due to the severe deformity.”

Lessons Learned

This unusual case has raised awareness about the importance of rabbit nutrition, especially during pregnancy. “Rabbits need a balanced diet, rich in calcium and vitamin D,” Dr. Xuereb advised. “This can be found in commercial rabbit food, or fresh vegetables like carrots and leafy greens.”

it’s a reminder of the resilience of nature. Despite its challenging start, this little rabbit has shown remarkable determination to live its life to the fullest.

As for the rabbit, it’s now receiving specialized care at the vet clinic. With proper nutrition and care, there’s hope that it might even grow into a healthy adult rabbit, proving that even against the odds, life finds a way.
