Malta & the $29B Iran War: Our Stake in Conflict

US War Cost in Iran: A Billion-Dollar Burden

Imagine standing at the bustling Strait Street in Valletta, the sun dipping below the Grand Harbour, and contemplating this: The United States has spent nearly $29 billion on its war in Iran. That’s more than the entire Maltese GDP in 2020. This staggering figure, recently revealed by the Pentagon, begs the question: How does this global conflict resonate with Malta, and what does it mean for us?

From the Strait to the Strait of Hormuz

Malta, an island nation with a strategic location between Europe and North Africa, has always been a crossroads of history. Today, it finds itself in the crosshairs of another global power play, this time in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important oil chokepoint, is where the US-Iran conflict is playing out. This is where the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, keeps a watchful eye on Iranian activities. And it’s where the $29 billion has been spent over nearly two decades.

But why should Malta care? Well, for starters, our energy security is tied to the stability of the Middle East. Around 80% of Europe’s gas supply comes from there. Any disruption in the region can send shockwaves to our energy markets. Plus, Malta’s strategic location makes it a potential hub for energy transit, with projects like the Southern Gas Corridor and the EastMed pipeline on the horizon.

Malta’s Role in the Global Chess Game

Malta’s neutrality has been a cornerstone of its foreign policy. But that doesn’t mean we’re immune to the ripples of global conflicts. In fact, our neutrality has made us an attractive partner for both sides. The US has been a key ally, with the two countries signing a Visiting Forces Agreement in 2001. Iran, on the other hand, has shown interest in Malta’s energy sector, with talks of cooperation in the past.

In 2019, Malta hosted the EU-Iran Business Forum, a sign of our willingness to facilitate dialogue. But with the US ratcheting up sanctions on Iran, our position has become even more delicate. Last year, the US even threatened to impose sanctions on Malta if it went ahead with a gas pipeline project with Iran. It’s a fine line we’re walking, balancing our interests and our principles.

Malta’s Stake in the US-Iran Conflict

The $29 billion spent by the US on the war in Iran is a stark reminder of the human and financial cost of conflict. But it’s also a wake-up call for Malta. As we of global politics, we must ask ourselves: What is our role in this conflict? How can we protect our interests while staying true to our values? And perhaps most importantly, how can we use our unique position to foster dialogue and peace?

As we stand at the Strait Street, watching the sun set over the Grand Harbour, let’s remember that our island’s future is intertwined with the world’s. The cost of conflict is not just a distant figure, but a tangible reality that touches our shores. It’s high time we start asking the tough questions and demanding answers.

Let’s make our voice heard. Let’s make our presence felt. Because Malta matters, and our future is worth fighting for – but not with bombs and bullets. With diplomacy, dialogue, and a commitment to peace.
