SMEs Warn: Electoral Promises Need Consultation
Promises, Promises: Chamber of SMEs Sounds Alarm on Lack of Consultation in Electoral Pledges
Imagine this: you’re walking down Republic Street, Malta’s bustling heart, and you’re stopped every few steps by candidates eager to share their plans for the country. But what if they’re making these promises without ever asking for your input? That’s the concern raised by the Chamber of SMEs, as we head into the electoral season.
SMEs: The Pulse of the Economy
The Chamber of SMEs represents the backbone of our economy – small and medium enterprises that employ two-thirds of Malta’s workforce. Yet, they feel overlooked in the promise-making process. “We’re not against pledges,” says Chamber President Marthese Portelli, “but we want to see them backed by real consultation and dialogue with the very people who’ll be affected.”
Promises Unkept: A Familiar Tune?
Remember the 2017 election? The Chamber points out that many promises made then – like reducing bureaucracy and streamlining processes – are yet to materialise. “We’re not saying these can’t be achieved,” says Portelli, “but it’s crucial to involve us in the planning, so we can help identify obstacles and solutions.”
Take, for instance, the promise of increased digitalisation. SMEs are eager to embrace it, but they need support and consultation to ensure it’s done right. “We can’t just be told ‘go digital’. We need help understanding what that means, how to do it, and what support is available,” explains Portelli.
: A Call for Dialogue
The Chamber is calling on all political parties to engage in meaningful dialogue with SMEs before making promises. They want to see plans that are realistic, achievable, and backed by solid consultation. “We’re not asking for special treatment,” says Portelli, “just a seat at the table when it comes to discussing our country’s future.”
After all, as we walk down Republic Street, it’s the SMEs that make up the vibrant mix our local economy. Their success is our success. And their voices deserve to be heard.
