Rape Suspect’s Dramatic Escape Attempt in Heart of Valletta

In the bustling heart of Malta’s capital, a man suspected of rape made a daring bid for freedom, leading police on a tense chase through the narrow streets of Valletta. The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, has left locals shocked and on edge.

Escape Attempt Gone Wrong

The suspect, identified by police as a 32-year-old Maltese man, was being escorted by officers from the law courts in St. George’s Square towards the Corradino Correctional Facility. In a sudden move, he broke free from his escorts and sprinted towards the busy Republic Street, causing pedestrians to scatter in surprise.

The chase led them through the historic streets of Valletta, past iconic landmarks like the Grandmaster’s Palace and the Church of St. Catherine of Italy. Police quickly gave chase, with the suspect’s escape attempt lasting only a few minutes before he was apprehended near the City Gate.

Community Reacts: Fear and Concern

News of the escape attempt spread quickly among Valletta residents and visitors alike. Many expressed fear and concern, with some recalling similar incidents in the past. “It’s scary to think this could happen in broad daylight, right in the middle of our city,” said Maria, a local shopkeeper.

Valletta Local Council has since issued a statement reassuring residents that such incidents are rare and that the police are doing everything in their power to maintain safety in the city. They have also called for increased security measures around the law courts.

Police: No Stone Unturned in Investigation

Superintendent of Police, Keith Arnaud, confirmed that the suspect was rearrested and is now back in custody. He also reassured the public that the police are leaving no stone unturned in their investigation. “We understand the concern this incident has caused and we want to assure the public that we are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our community,” he said.

The suspect is expected to appear in court again next week, where he will face charges of rape and escape from lawful custody.
