Malta Mourns: Diver Dies in Mediterranean Rescue Mission
Tragedy in the Mediterranean: Maltese Diver Dies in Search for Missing Italians
The Mediterranean, our island’s backyard, has once again witnessed a tale of bravery and tragedy. This time, it’s the loss of a Maltese rescue diver, 32-year-old Matthew Xuereb, who was part of the extensive search operation for two missing Italians off the coast of Sicily.
The Incident
On the morning of April 18, a distress call from a capsized boat near the Sicilian island of Lampedusa sent rescue teams into action. Among them was Xuereb, a seasoned diver with Malta’s Civil Protection Department. As he and his team scoured the depths, the unthinkable happened. A strong current swept him away, and despite the valiant efforts of his colleagues, Xuereb didn’t resurface.
A Community Mourns
News of Xuereb’s death across Malta. His family, friends, and colleagues are devastated. “Matthew was a hero,” said his cousin, Joseph Xuereb. “He dedicated his life to saving others. We’re proud of him, but we’re heartbroken too.”
Xuereb was no stranger to danger. He had participated in numerous rescue missions, including the 2015 migrant boat tragedy off Libya, where he helped save over 2,000 lives. His loss has left a void in Malta’s rescue community, with many paying tribute to his courage and sacrifice.
The Search Continues
The search for the two missing Italians, a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, continues. Despite the tragic turn of events, Maltese rescue teams remain undeterred. “We won’t stop until we’ve done everything humanly possible,” vowed a spokesperson for Malta’s Civil Protection Department.
Back in Malta, the diving community is rallying around Xuereb’s family. A fundraiser has been set up at the popular Paceville bar, The George, where Xuereb was a regular. “We want to show his family that they’re not alone,” said the bar’s manager, Mark Camilleri.
Remembering a Hero
Xuereb’s body was brought back to Malta on April 20. His funeral, a somber affair, was attended by hundreds. As the hearse passed through the streets of Rabat, where Xuereb grew up, residents lined the streets, many in tears.
Xuereb’s sacrifice serves as a stark reminder of the risks our rescue teams take every day. It’s also a testament to Malta’s commitment to saving lives at sea, a commitment that won’t waver despite the heartache.
As we mourn Xuereb, let’s remember his bravery. Let’s remember the lives he saved. And let’s stand ready to support his family and our rescue teams in their time of need.
