Bulgaria Wins Eurovision 2026: Malta’s Night to Remember

Eurovision Magic: How Bulgaria Stole the Show in Malta

Imagine this: it’s the final night of Eurovision 2026, and the Mediterranean Sea is a mirror of the stars above, reflecting the electric energy of the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre. The air is thick with anticipation, and not just because of the humid Mediterranean night. Tonight, the world’s eyes are on us, and we’re about to witness history.

From Sofia to Ta’ Qali: Bulgaria’s Unlikely Triumph

Bulgaria, a country not typically associated with Eurovision glory, had sent a humble yet powerful package to Malta this year. Intimately performed by Koli and her band, “Eyes That Lie” was a captivating blend of folk and pop, a musical love letter to Bulgaria’s rural roots. The song, written by the duo itself, had already stirred emotions back home. But could it win over Europe?

Malta, with its rich musical heritage, was no stranger to the Eurovision stage. Our own Destiny Chukunyere had brought us to the top in 2020, and we were eager to see another Mediterranean country claim the crown. But as the votes poured in from across the continent, it became clear that this year, the wind was blowing from the Balkans.

Malta’s Street Parties: A Night to Remember

As the results rolled in, Malta’s streets came alive. Republic Street in Valletta was a sea of blue and white, Bulgaria’s national colours, as fans cheered and danced. In Paceville, St. Julian’s, the nightlife hub was a riot of colour and sound, with revellers singing along to “Eyes That Lie” in Bulgarian and English. Even in the quieter towns like Rabat and Mdina, the joy was palpable, as residents gathered in piazzas to watch the results on big screens.

Back at the MFCC, Koli and her band were overwhelmed. “We never expected this,” she told the press, her eyes glistening with tears. “We just wanted to share our story, our music, with the world. To win… it’s a dream come true.”

What’s Next for Eurovision and Malta?

With the dust settled and the confetti cleaned up, the question on everyone’s lips is: where next for Eurovision? The contest has been a boon for Malta, bringing tourists, investment, and international attention. But with the win going to Bulgaria this year, could we see the contest heading east in 2027?

Malta’s Minister for Tourism, Dr. Clayton Bartolo, was optimistic. “Eurovision has shown us that Malta is a global player,” he said. “We’re ready to host again, and we’re ready to compete. Bring it on, Europe!”

As for Koli and her band, they’re already planning their victory tour. “We can’t wait to bring our music to more people,” Koli said. “And who knows? Maybe we’ll see you in Bulgaria soon, Malta!”
