ADPD: A Call for Holistic Health in Malta’s Healthcare scene

Imagine you’re walking along the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the sun warming your face, when you notice a poster outside the Medical Association’s building. It’s an invitation to a public meeting, hosted by the Alternative Democratic Party (ADPD), titled ‘Holistic Health: A New Vision for Malta’. You pause, intrigued. What does ‘holistic health’ mean, and why is ADPD pushing for it?

Holistic Health: A New Approach

Holistic health, as ADPD envisions it, is a radical shift from the current disease-focused model to a preventive, patient-centered approach. It’s about treating the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – rather than just symptoms. It’s about empowering patients to take control of their health, and it’s about making healthcare a community affair, not just a hospital one.

But why now? Malta’s healthcare system is facing challenges, from an aging population to rising chronic diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated these issues. ADPD believes that now is the time to rethink our approach to health, and they’re not alone. The World Health Organization has been advocating for holistic health for years.

ADPD’s Proposed Changes

So, what does ADPD’s holistic health vision look like in practice? Here are a few key proposals:

    • Community Health Hubs: Imagine a health center in your local village or town, offering not just medical care, but also wellness programs, mental health support, and health education. ADPD wants to see these community health hubs springing up across Malta.
    • Integrative Medicine: This is about combining conventional medicine with complementary therapies like acupuncture, yoga, or mindfulness. ADPD wants to see these practices integrated into Malta’s healthcare system.
    • Health in All Policies: ADPD wants to see health considered in every policy decision, from urban planning to education. This means creating green spaces in our cities, promoting healthy food in schools, and more.

Making It Happen

ADPD knows that change won’t happen overnight. They’re calling for a national conversation about health, involving everyone from healthcare professionals to ordinary citizens. They’re also pushing for more funding for preventive healthcare and for integrative medicine to be taught in Malta’s medical schools.

Dr. Gordon Cordina, ADPD’s health spokesperson, puts it this way: “We’re not saying we have all the answers. But we know that the current system isn’t working for everyone. We want to start a conversation about how we can do better. Because everyone deserves to be healthy, and to have a say in their own health.”

So, the next time you’re walking down Republic Street, take a moment to consider: what does holistic health mean to you? And how can we, as a community, make it a reality?
