Drug Bust in Qormi: Man Arrested, 500g Cannabis & Ecstasy Seized

Drugs Seized, Man Arrested in Qormi Roadblock

In the quiet, early morning hours of Tuesday, a routine traffic stop in Qormi turned into a significant bust for Maltese police. A man, driving a silver Ford Focus, was pulled over at the roadblock near St. George’s Basilica. Little did he know, his car was about to reveal more than just a routine traffic violation.

Roadblock Yields Surprising Discovery

As the police officer approached the vehicle, he noticed something amiss. The driver, a 35-year-old local resident, seemed nervous, his hands trembling slightly as he handed over his license. A quick check of the car’s interior revealed a suspicious package tucked away in the glove compartment. A closer inspection unveiled a stash of what appeared to be marijuana, along with some suspected ecstasy pills.

The man was promptly arrested and taken into custody for further questioning. The seized drugs, weighing in at approximately 500 grams of cannabis and 50 ecstasy tablets, were sent for laboratory analysis. If confirmed, this would make it one of the larger drug busts in Qormi in recent months.

Qormi Residents React

News of the bust spread quickly through the tight-knit community of Qormi. Residents, many of whom were already awake and preparing for the day, reacted with a mix of surprise and relief. “We’ve always known Qormi to be a peaceful place,” said Maria, a local shopkeeper. “It’s worrying to think that this kind of thing could be happening right under our noses.”

However, others saw the arrest as a positive step. “If the police are out there doing their job, then that’s a good thing,” commented Joseph, a retired mechanic. “We want our streets to be safe, and if that means a few roadblocks, then so be it.”

Police Vow to Continue Efforts

Inspector Joseph Borg, leading the operation, stated, “This arrest is a testament to our commitment to keeping Malta’s streets drug-free. We will continue to conduct regular roadblocks and patrols, especially in areas where we suspect drug activity.” He also encouraged the public to report any suspicious behavior to the police.

The arrested man is currently being held at the police headquarters in Floriana, pending further investigations. If charged and convicted, he faces up to nine years in prison and a hefty fine, according to Malta’s Drug Abuse Act.
