Turtle Rescued in Little Armier: A Sunny Day Success Story

Turtle Tale: A Sunny Day Rescue in Little Armier

Imagine this: a sweltering summer’s day in Malta, the sun beating down on the azure waters of the Mediterranean. You’re at Little Armier, a picturesque bay on the northwest coast, known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning views of the nearby islands. Suddenly, a cry for help breaks the tranquility. It’s not a human in distress, but a creature of the sea – a turtle, struggling in the shallows.

This was the scene that unfolded last week, when a group of life guards and Nature Trust volunteers sprang into action to rescue the reptile in need. The turtle, later identified as a Loggerhead, was entangled in a mass of fishing net, a common hazard for these marine creatures.

Life Guards: First Responders

Life guards from the Malta Life Saving Association (MLSA) were the first on the scene. Stationed at the nearby Golden Bay, they wasted no time in rushing to Little Armier when they received the distress call. “We’re trained to respond to all sorts of emergencies,” said Matthew Xuereb, one of the life guards involved in the rescue. “Seeing a creature in distress is no different. We had to act fast.”

The life guards waded into the water, carefully approaching the turtle to assess the situation. It was clear that the turtle was exhausted and distressed, its flippers thrashing weakly as it tried to free itself from the net.

Nature Trust: The Expert Touch

Meanwhile, volunteers from the Nature Trust Malta were also racing to the scene. With their expertise in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, they were crucial in ensuring the turtle’s safe release. Upon arrival, they took over the rescue operation, working alongside the life guards to carefully cut away the net from the turtle’s body and flippers.

“It was a delicate operation,” said Mark Scerri, a Nature Trust volunteer. “We had to be careful not to cause any more harm to the turtle. It was clear that it had been struggling for some time.”

Once freed from the net, the turtle was brought to shore for a quick check-up. It was a Loggerhead, a species commonly found in Maltese waters. Despite its ordeal, it appeared to be in relatively good health, with no apparent injuries.

A Happy Ending and a Warning

The turtle was then released back into the sea, swimming away strongly, much to the relief and joy of those who had worked to save it. “It’s always a great feeling to see a rescue like this have a happy ending,” said Xuereb. “But it’s also a reminder of the dangers that marine life faces, especially from discarded fishing gear.”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact of human activity on marine life. Fishing nets, lines, and other debris pose a significant threat to turtles and other sea creatures. The Nature Trust Malta urges the public to be mindful of this and to report any sightings of entangled or distressed marine life.

As for the life guards and volunteers, they’re ready for the next rescue, hoping that it won’t involve another turtle tangled in a net. But until then, they’ll continue to patrol the beaches of Malta, ready to respond to any cry for help, whether it’s from a human or a creature of the sea.
