Kevin Camilleri: GWU’s New General Secretary
Kevin Camilleri: The New Voice of Malta’s Workers
In the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta, the General Workers’ Union (GWU) headquarters buzzed with a different energy today. The union’s council members gathered, not just for another meeting, but to witness history in the making. Kevin Camilleri, a name familiar to many in Malta’s labor movement, was officially approved as the GWU’s new General Secretary.
From Shop Floor to Union’s Helm
Camilleri’s journey to the top of Malta’s largest trade union is a testament to his dedication and passion for workers’ rights. Born and raised in Ħamrun, a town known for its strong working-class roots, Camilleri’s understanding of the struggles faced by Malta’s workers is not just theoretical. He’s lived it, having started his career on the shop floor of a local manufacturing plant.
Over the years, Camilleri climbed the ranks within the GWU, his commitment and insight earning him the respect of his peers. He’s been a shop steward, a council member, and most recently, the union’s Assistant General Secretary. Today, he steps into the role vacated by Mario Camilleri, no relation, who retired after 15 years at the helm.
Camilleri’s Vision for Malta’s Workers
So, what does Kevin Camilleri’s appointment mean for Malta’s workers? In his acceptance speech, Camilleri outlined a vision that’s both progressive and pragmatic. He promised to continue the GWU’s fight for fair wages and better working conditions, but also emphasized the need to adapt to the changing world of work.
“We’re living in a time of rapid change,” Camilleri said, “From automation to the gig economy, the challenges our workers face are evolving. We need to evolve with them. We need to be their voice, not just in the workplace, but also in the boardroom and in parliament.”
: Challenges and Opportunities
Camilleri takes over at a time when the GWU, and indeed the entire labor movement, faces both challenges and opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the precarity of many jobs, while also demonstrating the essential role of workers in Malta’s economy. The union’s new leader will have to navigate these complexities, advocating for workers while also fostering dialogue with employers and the government.
Camilleri is undaunted by the task ahead. “I’m ready to face these challenges head-on,” he said, “Because I know that, at the end of the day, I’m fighting for something worth fighting for – the rights and dignity of Malta’s workers.”
As Kevin Camilleri begins his tenure as GWU’s General Secretary, Malta’s workers look to him with hope. Hope that their voices will be heard, their rights protected, and their futures secured. And as Camilleri steps into his new office, overlooking the bustling streets of Valletta, he carries with him the weight of that hope, and the responsibility to turn it into reality.
