Malta Election Debate: Abela vs Grech – Who’s Ready to Rumble?

As the sun sets over the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, the stage is set for a clash of titans. Tonight, Malta’s political heavyweights will face off in the first live debate of the 2022 general election. But who’s ready to rumble, and what can we expect?

The Contenders

In one corner, we have the incumbent Prime Minister Robert Abela, leader of the Labour Party. He’s been in power since January 2020, following the resignation of his predecessor Joseph Muscat. Abela, a lawyer by profession, is the son of former Labour Prime Minister Dom Mintoff.

In the other corner, we have the Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, leader of the Nationalist Party. Grech, a former journalist and businessman, took over the party leadership in 2020. He’s the youngest leader of the Nationalist Party since Eddie Fenech Adami.

The Venue

The debate will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC) in Valletta, a historic building that once served as the Sacra Infermeria, a hospital during the time of the Knights of St. John. The MCC has hosted numerous high-profile events, including the 2017 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

The Issues

Tonight’s debate promises to touch on a wide range of issues, from the economy and COVID-19 recovery to housing, education, and the environment. Here are a few key topics to watch out for:

    • Economy and Jobs: Both leaders will be grilled on their plans to boost economic growth and create jobs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • Housing Crisis: Malta’s housing market has been a hot topic, with both parties promising solutions to the chronic shortage of affordable homes.
    • Environment and Climate Change: With Malta set to host the COP26 climate summit in November, expect some tough questions on how each party plans to tackle environmental challenges.

But with just over a month to go until election day on June 3, there’s still plenty of time for surprises and unexpected twists. So, grab your popcorn, folks. It’s debate night in Malta!
