Malta Man Completes London to Malta Run for Homeless

Zach Vella: From London to Malta, One Step at a Time for the Homeless

Imagine pounding the pavement day after day, your feet carrying you over 1,800 miles, from the bustling streets of London to the sun-kissed shores of Malta. This wasn’t a dream or a metaphorical journey, but the reality for Zach Vella, who completed this epic run in aid of Malta’s homeless population.

An Ordinary Man on an Extraordinary Mission

Zach, a 32-year-old Maltese man living in London, is no stranger to challenges. A former Royal Marine, he’s used to pushing his body to its limits. But this time, it was different. This time, he was running not just for himself, but for those who often go unnoticed, sleeping rough on the streets of his homeland.

“I’ve seen the homeless situation in Malta firsthand,” Zach says, “and I wanted to do something to raise awareness and funds to help them.” So, on April 12, 2021, he set off from the iconic Tower Bridge in London, his eyes fixed on the distant Maltese islands.

Malta’s Streets Echo with Support

Zach’s journey took him through 11 countries, across mountains, through forests, and along countless roads. But it was the final stretch, the last few miles on Malta’s own streets, that resonated the most. As he ran through towns like Birkirkara and Msida, cheers erupted from passersby, many of whom had followed his progress on social media.

“Seeing the support from Maltese people, both at home and abroad, was incredible,” Zach recalls. “It spurred me on, especially in those tough final days.”

A Finish Line and a New Beginning

After 72 grueling days, Zach finally crossed the finish line at the iconic Triton Fountain in Valletta’s City Gate on June 22. He was greeted by a crowd of supporters, including representatives from the Malta Community Chest Fund, the charity he was running for.

The run raised an impressive €15,000 for the charity, which supports various causes, including homelessness. But for Zach, it was about more than just the money. “I hope my run has raised awareness about the issue of homelessness in Malta,” he says. “It’s a problem that’s often hidden, but it’s there, and it needs our attention.”

As for what’s next, Zach is already planning his next challenge. But for now, he’s taking a well-deserved rest, his feet up, looking out at the Mediterranean Sea, the very same sea that guided him home.

“I couldn’t have done this without the support of everyone who followed my journey, donated, and cheered me on,” Zach says. “So, thank you, Malta. Now, let’s keep the momentum going and make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
