Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic London-Malta Run for Homeless

Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope: From London to Malta for the Homeless

Imagine running 1,800 kilometers, not for a medal or a personal best, but to raise awareness and funds for Malta’s homeless. This is exactly what local athlete Zach Vella accomplished, completing his epic London-Malta run on Sunday, October 23rd, at the iconic Mnajdra Temples in Qrendi.

An Inspiring Journey

Zach Vella set off from the Tower of London on August 1st, averaging an astonishing 40 kilometers a day. His journey took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, across the Mediterranean to his home island. Along the way, he faced blisters, fatigue, and even a bout of COVID-19, but his resolve never wavered.

“I saw this run as a metaphor for the journey of the homeless,” Zach explained. “It’s not easy, it’s full of challenges, but with determination and support, you can make it through.”

Malta’s Homeless Crisis

Malta’s homeless population is estimated to be around 1,000 people, according to the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector. The pandemic has exacerbated the situation, with many losing their jobs and homes. Zach’s run aimed to shine a light on this often-overlooked issue and raise funds for local homeless shelters.

“We have a responsibility to look out for each other,” Zach said. “No one chooses to be homeless. It can happen to anyone, and it’s our duty to support those who find themselves in this situation.”

A Warm Welcome Home

Zach was greeted by a cheering crowd at Mnajdra, including his family, friends, and representatives from local homeless shelters. He had raised over €10,000 for the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector’s homeless services by the end of his run.

“I’m overwhelmed by the support I’ve received,” Zach said. “It’s not just about the money raised; it’s about the awareness we’ve created. I hope this run has opened some eyes and hearts to the plight of Malta’s homeless.”

Zach’s run may be over, but his mission continues. He encourages everyone to donate to the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector’s homeless services and to volunteer their time at local shelters. “We can all make a difference,” he says. “We just need to be willing to put one foot in front of the other and take that first step.”
