Drugs Seized in St. Julian’s Road Stop: Man Arrested

In the heart of Malta’s bustling St. Julian’s, a routine police stop turned into a significant drugs bust yesterday. The suspect, a 32-year-old man from Msida, was found in possession of a substantial amount of cannabis and ecstasy, according to a statement from the Malta Police Force.

The Arrest

The incident occurred around 10 pm on Triq San Giljan, a busy street known for its vibrant nightlife. The man was pulled over in his car, a silver Ford Focus, for a routine check. Police officers, suspecting illegal activities, searched the vehicle and discovered the drugs hidden in the glove compartment.

“We’re committed to keeping our streets safe,” said Inspector Mario Vella, leading the operation. “Even during peak tourist season, we maintain a strong presence in areas like St. Julian’s to deter and disrupt any criminal activity.”

The Drugs and the Charges

The seized drugs weighed approximately 50 grams, with a street value estimated at around €1,000. The man was arrested on the spot and taken to the St. Julian’s Police Station for questioning. He was later charged with drug possession and trafficking, and is expected to appear in court within the next 48 hours.

This arrest comes as part of the Malta Police Force’s ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes on the island. In recent months, there has been an increase in drug seizures, with police seizing over 100 kilograms of cannabis and 10 kilograms of cocaine so far this year.

“We’re sending a clear message to anyone involved in drug trafficking,” said Superintendent Richard Cachia, head of the Drug Squad. “Malta is not a safe haven for your illegal activities. We will continue to disrupt your operations and bring you to justice.”
