New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta: A Warm Welcome and a New Chapter

As the sun cast its golden glow over the Grand Harbour, a new chapter unfolded in Malta’s rich religious history. Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, stepped off the plane at Malta International Airport, ready to take up his post. But who is the man behind the mitre, and what does his arrival mean for the Maltese Catholic community?

From Poland to the Mediterranean

Born in Poland in 1963, Mgr Załuski has a wealth of experience in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He has served in various capacities, from being the Deputy Head of Mission at the Apostolic Nunciature in the United States to his most recent role as the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine. Now, he brings his extensive experience and warm demeanour to our sunny islands.

In an interview with Hot Malta, Mgr Załuski shared his initial impressions of Malta. “I was struck by the beauty of the islands and the warmth of the people. I look forward to getting to know the Maltese people better and serving them in my new role.”

A New Face at the Apostolic Nunciature

The Apostolic Nunciature in Malta, located in the historic city of Valletta, has been a beacon of the Catholic Church’s presence in Malta since 1964. Mgr Załuski succeeds Archbishop Alberto Perlasca, who served as Apostolic Nuncio from 2014 to 2021. The Nunciature plays a crucial role in fostering relations between the Holy See and the Maltese government, as well as supporting the local Catholic community.

Mgr Załuski’s arrival coincides with a period of significant change in the Maltese Catholic Church. The recent appointment of Archbishop Charles Scicluna as the new Archbishop of Malta has brought a renewed energy and focus to the local Church. Mgr Załuski’s role will be instrumental in supporting Archbishop Scicluna and the Maltese Church as they navigate these changes.

: A New Chapter for the Maltese Catholic Community

Mgr Załuski’s appointment comes at a time when the Maltese Catholic community is reflecting on its past and looking towards its future. The recent Synod on Synodality, held at the St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, highlighted the importance of dialogue and discernment within the Church. Mgr Załuski’s experience and diplomatic skills will be invaluable in fostering this dialogue and helping the Maltese Church move forward.

As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a warm, approachable demeanour. The Maltese Catholic community can look forward to a new chapter in its history, one filled with dialogue, discernment, and growth. As Mgr Załuski himself said, “I am here to serve the people of Malta, to listen to their hopes and dreams, and to support them in any way I can.”
