New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta
New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski: A Fresh Face at the Vatican’s Malta Embassy
As the sun cast its golden glow over the Grand Harbour, a new figure touched down at Malta International Airport. Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the freshly appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, stepped onto Maltese soil, ready to take the reins of the Vatican’s diplomatic mission on our islands.
From Poland to the Mediterranean
Hailing from Poland, Mgr Załuski brings a wealth of experience to his new post. The 56-year-old priest has served in various diplomatic roles within the Holy See, most recently as the Under-Secretary for Relations with States at the Vatican’s Secretariat of State. His appointment was announced by Pope Francis in late July, succeeding Archbishop Alberto Perlo, who had served as Nuncio since 2016.
For Mgr Załuski, the move from Rome to Malta represents a significant change of pace and climate. “I’ve gone from the Eternal City to an island paradise,” he joked during his introductory press conference at the Apostolic Nunciature in Floriana. “I’m looking forward to experiencing Malta’s unique blend of history, culture, and faith.”
Navigating Malta’s Multicultural scene
As Nuncio, Mgr Załuski will serve as the Vatican’s ambassador to Malta and Libya, fostering diplomatic relations between the Holy See and these two distinct nations. In Malta, his role will involve maintaining close ties with the local Catholic Church, which counts over 90% of the population among its faithful, as well as engaging with the government and civil society on various issues.
One of his first tasks will be to strengthen the Vatican’s commitment to interfaith dialogue, given Malta’s multicultural scene. “I’m eager to build upon the excellent work of my predecessors in promoting understanding and cooperation among all religious communities,” he said.
Mgr Załuski will also play a key role in preparing for the upcoming visit of Pope Francis to Malta in April 2023. The Pope’s itinerary includes a stop at the historic city of Mdina, where he will meet with local families and deliver a mass at the ancient St. Paul’s Cathedral.
: A New Chapter for Maltese-Vatican Relations
As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, he brings a fresh perspective and a deep understanding of the Vatican’s priorities. His appointment comes at a time when the Maltese Catholic Church is grappling with several challenges, including declining vocations and the fallout from the recent sexual abuse scandals.
For the new Nuncio, the road ahead is filled with opportunities. “I’m excited to work alongside the local Church and the Maltese people to address these challenges and build a brighter future for the Catholic community here,” he said.
As Mgr Załuski embarks on this new chapter, one thing is clear: the Vatican’s diplomatic mission in Malta is in capable hands. With his wealth of experience, warm demeanor, and genuine enthusiasm, the Polish priest is set to make a significant impact on Maltese-Vatican relations.
Welcome to Malta, Mgr Załuski. We look forward to seeing the positive changes you’ll bring to our shores.
