New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta: A Warm Welcome and a New Era
Malta’s sunny skies greeted a new figure of significance today as Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, stepped off the plane at Malta International Airport. The Polish prelate, who has served in various diplomatic roles within the Vatican, is set to take up his new post, replacing Archbishop Alberto Bottari de Castello.
From Rome to Valletta: A New Chapter
Born in Warsaw in 1961, Mgr Załuski brings a wealth of experience to his new role. After completing his theological studies in Rome, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1987. He has served in various nunciatures around the world, including stints in the Philippines, Indonesia, and most recently, as the Apostolic Nuncio to Bulgaria.
In Valletta, Mgr Załuski will be responsible for representing the Holy See in Malta’s diplomatic, political, and religious spheres. He will also play a crucial role in fostering the already strong ties between the Maltese Catholic Church and the Vatican.
Malta’s Catholic Heritage: A Shared History
Malta’s deep Catholic roots are etched into its very scene. From the grand Baroque churches of Valletta to the ancient catacombs of Rabat, the island’s history is intertwined with its Catholic heritage. Mgr Załuski’s arrival coincides with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Order of St. John in Malta, a significant milestone that the Maltese Catholic Church is eagerly celebrating.
Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, the Archbishop of Malta, warmly welcomed the new Nuncio, expressing his confidence in Mgr Załuski’s ability to continue the strong collaboration between the Maltese Church and the Holy See. The Archbishop’s residence in Floriana, a stone’s throw from the historic city gates, will now be Mgr Załuski’s official residence.
: A New Apostolic Voice in Malta
As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective. His appointment comes at a time when the Maltese Church is engaged in various initiatives, including the ongoing synodal process and the celebration of the Order of St. John’s quincentennial.
In an interview with Hot Malta, Mgr Załuski expressed his excitement about his new posting, “Malta’s unique history and vibrant Catholic life make it a fascinating place to serve. I look forward to working closely with the Maltese Church and contributing to the spiritual life of the Maltese people.”
As Mgr Załuski begins his new chapter in Malta, the island welcomes him with open arms, ready to embrace the new apostolic voice that he brings.
