Turtle Rescued in Little Armier by Life Guards & Volunteers

Turtle Tale of Triumph: Life Guards and Volunteers Save Endangered Species in Little Armier

Imagine, if you will, the sun-kissed shores of Little Armier, a tranquil haven nestled between Mellieha and Golden Bay. This idyllic spot, beloved by locals and tourists alike, was the stage for an extraordinary rescue mission last weekend. A distressed turtle, a creature of the deep lost in the shallows, found itself in the caring hands of Malta’s Life Guards and Nature Trust volunteers.

Stranded in the Shallows

The day began like any other for the dedicated team of Life Guards patrolling the Maltese coast. Little did they know, a call for help was about to disrupt their routine. A concerned beachgoer spotted a turtle struggling in the shallow waters off Little Armier. The creature, later identified as a Loggerhead, was entangled in a mass of fishing net, a common threat to Malta’s marine life.

Life Guard, Daniel Azzopardi, was quick to respond. “We’ve encountered marine debris before, but this was different. The turtle was clearly distressed, and time was of the essence,” he recalls. With swift precision, Azzopardi and his team carefully approached the turtle, ensuring it remained calm while they assessed the situation.

Volunteers to the Rescue

Meanwhile, a group of Nature Trust volunteers, who had been conducting a beach clean-up nearby, heard about the plight of the turtle. Led by experienced volunteer, Maria Grech, they rushed to assist the Life Guards. Grech, an avid scuba diver, has encountered numerous turtles in Malta’s waters but had never seen one so desperately in need of help.

The combined efforts of the Life Guards and volunteers proved crucial. Working together, they gently cut away the tangled fishing net, freeing the turtle from its aquatic prison. The once distressed creature began to show signs of relief, its powerful flippers moving with renewed vigor.

A Happy Ending

The rescued turtle was then carefully transported to a nearby beach, where it was given time to recover. After a thorough check-up by the dedicated volunteers, it was deemed fit enough to be released back into the open sea. With a final wave goodbye, the turtle disappeared beneath the waves, its journey continuing under the watchful gaze of its human saviors.

This heartwarming tale serves as a reminder of the importance of marine conservation in Malta. The Loggerhead turtle, though not yet endangered in Maltese waters, faces numerous threats, including entanglement in fishing gear and habitat destruction. Initiatives like the Nature Trust’s beach clean-ups and the Life Guards’ marine debris removal efforts are vital in protecting these magnificent creatures.

If you’d like to get involved, the Nature Trust Malta is always looking for volunteers to help with their beach clean-ups and other conservation projects. You can also report any sightings of distressed marine life to the Life Guards or the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA). Together, we can ensure that Malta’s waters remain a safe haven for our marine friends.
