Malta’s Top Student Entrepreneurs Upcycle & Innovate
From Beach to Boardroom: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Bag Top Student Entrepreneurship Prize
In the heart of Malta’s historic capital, Valletta, a unique sight unfolded at the Mediterranean Conference Centre last week. Amidst the grand neoclassical architecture, two student-led startups, armed with innovative ideas and a passion for sustainability, took centre stage and walked away with the top prize at the annual Student Entrepreneurship Challenge.
Upcycling Waves: Beach2Business
Meet Beach2Business, a startup that’s turning Malta’s beach towels into stylish, upcycled fashion accessories. Led by University of Malta students, this eco-conscious venture is giving new life to old beach towels, reducing textile waste and creating unique, sustainable products.
Imagine strolling along Sliema’s promenade, not just admiring the sea view, but also spotting the very towels that could end up as a trendy bag or belt in your hands. That’s the vision Beach2Business is weaving into Malta’s coastal culture.
Hearing the Future: AudioPulse
AudioPulse, another winning startup, is revolutionising the way we perceive sound. Led by students from the University of Malta’s Faculty of ICT, this team is developing innovative hearing aid technology that’s not only more affordable but also smarter and sleeker.
Picture this: a hearing aid that learns your hearing profile, adapts to different environments, and even connects to your smartphone. That’s the future AudioPulse is working towards, aiming to improve the lives of Malta’s hearing-impaired community and beyond.
The Win & What’s Next
Both startups bagged €5,000 each, along with mentorship and incubation support from the Malta Enterprise and the University of Malta. But the real prize? The opportunity to turn their innovative ideas into reality, right here in Malta.
“We’re thrilled to see such innovative, sustainable, and community-focused ideas coming from our students,” said Prof. Godfrey Vella, Pro-Rector for Innovation and Internationalisation at the University of Malta. “We’re committed to supporting these startups as they grow and contribute to Malta’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.”
As for Beach2Business and AudioPulse, they’re now set to transform Malta’s beach culture and hearing aid industry, one upcycled towel and one innovative hearing aid at a time.
