Translation Summer School for Young People Returns in July
Imagine spending your summer holidays not just lounging on Malta’s sunny beaches, but also learning a new language and making friends from all over the world. This isn’t a dream scenario, but a reality thanks to the return of the annual Translation Summer School for Young People in July.
What is the Translation Summer School?
The Translation Summer School is an initiative by the University of Malta’s Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies. It’s a two-week programme designed for students aged 16 to 19 who are interested in languages and translation. Participants don’t need to have any prior knowledge of translation; they just need a passion for languages and a willingness to learn.
What happens at the Summer School?
During the two weeks, students are introduced to the world of translation. They learn about different types of translation, such as literary, technical, and legal translation. They also get hands-on experience, working on real-life translation projects. The programme includes workshops, lectures, and cultural activities that help students understand the cultural context of the languages they’re learning.
Last year, students spent a day at the Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu, learning about the history of maritime translation. They also visited the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, where they practised translating archaeological terms. These local experiences make the learning process more engaging and relevant to Malta’s unique cultural scene.
Why should you attend?
Attending the Translation Summer School is a great opportunity to improve your language skills, make new friends from around the globe, and explore Malta’s rich cultural heritage. Plus, it’s a fantastic addition to your CV, showing your interest in languages and cultural exchange.
Previous participants have praised the programme for its interactive approach and the opportunity it provides to learn from experienced translators. Many have also appreciated the chance to practice their language skills in a supportive environment.
So, if you’re a young language enthusiast looking to spend your summer in a meaningful way, consider applying for the Translation Summer School. It’s more than just a summer programme; it’s a chance to broaden your horizons, both literally and linguistically.
