Malta’s Repubblika: From Protests to Politics

From Protests to Parliament: Malta’s Newest Political Force

Picture this: a chilly January evening in 2019, thousands of Maltese citizens, young and old, united in a sea of red, marching from the historic City Gate to the steps of Parliament. They were not there to celebrate, but to demand justice, accountability, and change. Little did they know, they were witnessing the birth of a political movement that would dare to dream of governing Malta.

Today, that movement, known as Repubblika, has evolved from a grassroots protest group into a fully-fledged political party, ready to contest the next general election. Their journey is a testament to the power of collective action and the audacity of hope in Malta’s political scene.

Repubblika: A Movement Born Out of Frustration

Repubblika was born out of the frustration and anger that gripped Malta following the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017. Her killing exposed a web of corruption and cronyism that shook the very foundations of Maltese society. The government’s handling of the case, marked by a lack of transparency and accountability, only served to fuel public outrage.

In the face of such blatant injustice, Maltese citizens took to the streets. What started as spontaneous protests grew into a weekly phenomenon, with people from all walks of life demanding change. Repubblika was formed to channel this collective energy into a cohesive political force.

From Protests to Policy: Crafting a Manifesto for Change

Repubblika’s journey has been one of transformation. From a group that initially focused on street protests and civil disobedience, they have evolved into a party that is serious about governing. Their manifesto, launched in 2021, is a comprehensive blueprint for change, covering everything from economic policy to environmental protection.

At the heart of their proposals is a commitment to good governance and accountability. They promise to strengthen independent institutions, increase transparency, and fight corruption. They also advocate for a more inclusive and equal society, with policies aimed at improving social welfare, education, and healthcare.

One of their most ambitious proposals is the establishment of a National Anti-Corruption Agency, an independent body with the power to investigate and prosecute corruption cases. This, they believe, is key to restoring public trust in institutions.

Ready for the Challenge of Governance

Repubblika’s rise to prominence has not been without its challenges. As a new party, they face an uphill battle against established political forces. They have had to navigate internal disagreements and external criticism, all while trying to maintain the momentum of their grassroots movement.

Yet, despite these challenges, Repubblika remains undeterred. Their leaders, a mix of seasoned activists and political newcomers, are ready to take on the challenge of governing. They are acutely aware of the magnitude of the task ahead, but they are also convinced that Malta deserves better.

“We are not perfect,” admits Repubblika’s co-founder, Manuel Delia, “but we are ready to learn, to listen, and to govern in the best interests of all Maltese people.”
