Naxxar’s Palazzo Parisio: Urgent Action Needed
Naxxar’s Collapsing Icon: Expert’s Urgent Warning
Standing at the edge of Triq San Pawl in Naxxar, you can’t miss it. The once-grand Palazzo Parisio, now a crumbling shell, has become a stark symbol of the island’s struggle with heritage preservation. A recent expert report has sounded the alarm, warning that this historic site is in a ‘very precarious’ situation.
Palazzo Parisio: A Brief History
Built in the 18th century, Palazzo Parisio was once a beacon of Naxxar’s nobility. It played host to lavish parties, witnessed historic decisions, and stood as a testament to Maltese Baroque architecture. But time, neglect, and nature have taken their toll. Now, it’s a haunting reminder of what was, and a worrying sign of what could be.
Expert’s Warning: ‘Very Precarious’ Situation
Dr. Mario Buhagiar, a leading heritage architect, has warned that Palazzo Parisio is in a critical state. His report, commissioned by Din l-Art Ħelwa, highlights severe structural damage, water ingress, and the threat of collapse. ‘The situation is very precarious,’ he says, ‘We’re talking about a building that’s on the brink.’
Dr. Buhagiar’s report is not the first warning. In 2019, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage issued a similar alert, urging immediate action. Yet, three years later, the building remains in limbo, a victim of bureaucratic delays and funding issues.
Community Concern and Calls for Action
Naxxar locals have been watching the decay with growing concern. ‘It’s a part of our history, our identity,’ says Maria Camilleri, a Naxxar resident. ‘Seeing it crumble like this, it’s heartbreaking.’
Din l-Art Ħelwa has been at the forefront of the campaign to save Palazzo Parisio. They’ve called on the government to expedite the process, secure funding, and ensure the building’s future. ‘We can’t afford to lose another piece of our heritage,’ says the organization’s president, Anthony Fenech.
Meanwhile, the government has promised action. Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, José Herrera, has stated that his ministry is working on a plan to restore and repurpose the building. But with each passing day, Palazzo Parisio’s fate hangs in the balance.
As we stand at the edge of Triq San Pawl, looking at the collapsing icon of Naxxar, we’re reminded of the urgency of the situation. This is not just about a building; it’s about our history, our identity, our collective responsibility. It’s high time we act before it’s too late.
