Delia Challenges Muscat on Gov’t Costs

‘Where’s your calculator?’ Delia challenges Muscat on government costs

Malta’s Opposition Leader Bernard Grech wasn’t the only one armed with figures at yesterday’s parliamentary session. Adrian Delia, MP for Mdina, challenged Finance Minister Edward Scicluna to break out his calculator, questioning the government’s spending habits.

Delia’s Cost-Cutting Queries

Delia, standing in the packed Chamber, queried the Minister on a range of expenses. From the €15 million spent on the Three Cities project to the €10 million earmarked for the Marsa Sports Complex, Delia wanted to know where the money was going and whether it was being well-spent.

“Where’s your calculator, Minister?” Delia asked, “Because we need to start adding up these costs and see if they’re really benefiting the Maltese people.”

Scicluna’s Response: ‘We’re Spending Wisely’

Scicluna, in his characteristic calm demeanor, responded that the government was investing in projects that would have long-term benefits. He cited the Three Cities project as an example, arguing that it would boost tourism and create jobs.

“We’re not just spending for the sake of it,” Scicluna said, “We’re investing in Malta’s future.”

Grech Weighs In: ‘Transparency Needed’

Grech, the PN leader, echoed Delia’s concerns, calling for more transparency in government spending. He argued that the people of Malta deserved to know exactly where their tax money was going.

“We’re not against spending,” Grech said, “But we want to see value for money. And that means open, transparent accounting.”

As the debate raged on, one thing was clear: the cost of government is a hot topic in Malta, and the people want answers.
