Man Hospitalised After Gżira Balcony Fall
Gżira Balcony Fall: Man Hospitalised After Three-Storey Plunge
Emergency services rushed to a Gżira apartment block on Tuesday evening after a man tumbled three storeys from his balcony, landing with a thud on the concrete below. The dramatic scene unfolded around 8 pm at a residential block on Triq il-Kbira, leaving the man, in his late 30s, with serious injuries.
Witnesses Recall Terrifying Moment
Neighbours and passersby described the moment as chilling. “I heard a loud thud and then screams,” said Maria, a resident who wished to remain anonymous. “I looked out and saw him lying there, not moving. It was horrible.” Another witness, who preferred not to be named, recounted, “I saw him fall. It happened so fast. I hope he’s okay.”
Rescue Operation Launched
Police and Civil Protection Department officers quickly cordoned off the area, while an ambulance crew attended to the injured man. He was stabilised at the scene before being rushed to Mater Dei Hospital. His condition was described as ‘stable’ but ‘serious’ by medical sources.
Investigations Underway
Preliminary investigations suggest the man may have slipped while attempting to secure a loose balcony railing. However, police are treating the incident as an accident and are not ruling out other possibilities. They are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the fall to come forward.
This is not the first such incident in Malta. In 2019, a man fell to his death from a balcony in Sliema, and in 2018, a woman suffered serious injuries after falling from a balcony in Birkirkara. These incidents have raised concerns about balcony safety, with calls for stricter regulations and better maintenance.
In the meantime, residents of the Gżira block are left shaken. “It’s scary to think something like this can happen so close to home,” said one resident. “I hope they find out what caused it and take steps to prevent it happening again.”
