Paws Up for Safety: Local Councils Invited to Register for Animal First Aid Courses

Imagine this: a hot summer’s day in Marsaxlokk. The bustling fishing village is filled with tourists and locals alike, enjoying the sunshine and the fresh catch of the day. Suddenly, a dog collapses, panting heavily. Panic sets in. But what if someone knew exactly what to do?

That’s the scenario the Animal Welfare Department (AWD) and the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) are hoping to prepare local councils for. They’ve recently invited councils to register their interest in animal first aid courses, aiming to create a network of trained volunteers ready to spring into action across Malta.

Why the Need for Animal First Aid?

Malta, with its rich history and diverse wildlife, is home to countless animals. From stray cats and dogs to farm animals and native species, they all deserve our care and protection. Accidents, injuries, and heatstroke can happen at any time, and quick action can mean the difference between life and death for an animal in distress.

“We’ve seen too many cases where prompt action could have saved an animal’s life,” says Dr. Maria Galea, Veterinary Officer at AWD. “With these courses, we’re empowering local councils and their volunteers to be the first line of defense for animals in need.”

What Will the Courses Cover?

The animal first aid courses will be tailored to suit the Maltese context, covering a range of topics including:

    • Recognizing signs of distress and injury
    • Administering first aid for common injuries and illnesses
    • Handling animals safely and humanely
    • Providing emergency care until professional veterinary help arrives

The courses will be led by experienced veterinary professionals and animal welfare experts, ensuring that participants receive the most up-to-date and effective training.

“We’re not expecting volunteers to become veterinarians overnight,” says Dr. Galea. “But with these courses, they’ll have the confidence and skills to provide crucial initial care and make a real difference in an animal’s life.”

Registering Your Interest

Local councils interested in registering for the animal first aid courses can do so by contacting the MCVS on +356 2122 1000 or via email at info@mcv.org.mt. The deadline for registrations is Friday, 30th June.

“We’re excited to see the positive impact these courses will have on animal welfare across Malta,” says Dr. Galea. “Together, we can create a network of caring, trained volunteers ready to make a difference in their communities.”
