Malta’s Local Councils: Register for Animal First Aid Courses

Local Councils: Ready to Save a Paw? Animal First Aid Courses on the Horizon

Imagine this: a hot summer day in Marsaxlokk, the sun beating down on the bustling fishing village. Suddenly, a distressed dog collapses on the pavement. In the crowd, a local council member steps forward, armed with knowledge and a first aid kit. This could soon be a reality as local councils are invited to register interest in animal first aid courses.

Why the Need for Animal First Aid Training?

Malta’s love for animals is no secret. From stray cats in Valletta’s historic streets to dogs lounging on Sliema’s seafront, our islands are home to countless creatures. Yet, unlike human first aid, animal first aid is not widely taught. This could change with the new initiative by the Animal Welfare Department and the Ministry for Gozo and Local Government.

“We’ve seen instances where quick action could have saved an animal’s life,” says Dr. Maria Galea, Veterinarian and Animal Welfare Officer. “With council members trained in animal first aid, we can improve the chances of survival for injured or distressed animals.”

What Will the Courses Cover?

The animal first aid courses will equip participants with essential skills to handle common animal emergencies. From road accidents to heatstroke, the courses will cover:

    • Recognizing signs of distress and injury
    • Administering first aid until veterinary help arrives
    • Safe handling and transportation of injured animals
    • Basic pet first aid techniques, such as CPR and the recovery position

Registering Interest: A Step Towards Pet-Friendly Communities

Local councils are invited to register their interest in the animal first aid courses by contacting the Animal Welfare Department. The courses will be free of charge and open to all council members, regardless of their locality.

Council members will not only gain a valuable skill but also strengthen their bond with their communities. “Imagine the peace of mind pet owners will have, knowing their local council members can help their pets in an emergency,” says Dr. Galea.

So, are you ready to make a difference, one paw at a time? Let’s turn Marsaxlokk’s scenario into a reality. Let’s make Malta’s streets safer for our furry friends.
