Unveiling Qolla l-Bajda’s Hidden History: A Battery’s Restoration Story
Imagine standing atop Qolla l-Bajda, a hill in Msida, gazing out at the Grand Harbour. Now, picture that view 300 years ago, with a battery of cannons ready to defend Malta’s shores. This was the reality of Qolla l-Bajda battery, a crucial part of Malta’s military history, now being restored to life.
From Fortifications to Forgotten: The Battery’s Journey
Completed in 1715 under the Order of St. John, Qolla l-Bajda battery once housed 24 cannons, protecting the Grand Harbour from seaward attacks. Over time, however, it fell into disuse and disrepair, its history fading from public memory. Today, a joint project by Din l-Art Ħelwa and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage is breathing new life into this forgotten fortification.
Restoring a Piece of Malta’s Military Past
The restoration, set to be completed by 2023, involves rebuilding the battery’s walls, reconstructing its gun platforms, and even recreating the original cannons. But it’s not just about bricks and mortar. The project aims to tell the battery’s story, making it a living museum that educates visitors about Malta’s military history.
“We want people to stand here and understand what it was like to defend Malta in the 18th century,” says Anthony Borg, project coordinator from Din l-Art Ħelwa. “It’s about bringing history to life.”
Once completed, the restored battery will offer panoramic views of the Grand Harbour, making it a must-visit spot for history buffs and tourists alike. It will also serve as a reminder of Malta’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
