Cyclist Seriously Injured in Birkirkara Truck Crash
Emergency services rushed to Birkirkara’s Triq San Pawl on Tuesday morning after a cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a truck. The incident, which occurred around 8:30 AM, brought traffic to a standstill and left locals shocked.
Scene of the Accident
The crash happened near the junction with Triq San Ġużepp, close to the Birkirkara Primary School. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the cyclist lying injured on the road and the truck blocking part of the street. “I saw the cyclist go down and the truck skid to a halt,” said one eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous.
Rescue and Aftermath
Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department arrived swiftly and stabilised the cyclist before transferring them to Mater Dei Hospital. The cyclist’s condition is reported to be serious but stable. Police closed off the road while they investigated the incident, causing delays for commuters and school drop-offs.
This incident highlights the ongoing concern for cyclist safety in Malta, particularly in urban areas like Birkirkara. According to Malta’s National Statistics Office, there were 152 cycling accidents reported in 2020, with 19 resulting in serious injuries.
Local councillor, Mario Mifsud, expressed his concern, “We need to do more to ensure the safety of cyclists. This could have been much worse. We’re looking into ways to improve infrastructure and awareness.”
Malta’s cycling community has been vocal about the need for better cycling infrastructure and safer roads. Groups like ‘Malta Cycling Advocacy’ have been campaigning for improved cycling conditions and better enforcement of traffic laws.
In the meantime, police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward. They can be contacted on 119 or via the 112 emergency number.
