Xewkija’s Rotunda Ready for St. John Feast After Restoration
As the sun sets over the picturesque village of Xewkija, the gleaming white dome of the Rotunda church stands tall, a beacon of pride and accomplishment for the local community. After years of meticulous work, the restoration of this architectural gem has been completed just in time for the annual feast of St. John the Baptist.
Reviving a Village Icon
The Rotunda, officially known as the Church of St. John the Baptist, is more than just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of Xewkija, a village nestled in the heart of Gozo. The restoration project, which began in 2017, was no small feat. It involved painstaking work to preserve the original features while ensuring the structure’s longevity.
From Crumbling Walls to Shining Dome
When the project started, the Rotunda’s condition was dire. Cracks marred its walls, and the once-glorious dome was a shadow of its former self. But the villagers, led by the local council and supported by the Church, were determined to restore their beloved church to its former glory.
The restoration process was as complex as it was rewarding. Workers painstakingly repaired the dome’s structure, ensuring it could withstand the test of time and the elements. They also restored the church’s interior, preserving its unique blend of Baroque and Neoclassical styles. The result is a church that looks much like it did when it was first built in the 17th century, but with the strength and safety of a modern structure.
A Feast of Celebration
The feast of St. John the Baptist, held annually on the 24th of June, is a highlight of the Gozitan calendar. This year, it promises to be even more special. The restored Rotunda will take center stage, its gleaming white dome a stark contrast against the night sky as the village celebrates its patron saint.
The feast will include the traditional procession, with the statue of St. John paraded through the streets, accompanied by fireworks and the beating of drums. But this year, the villagers will have an extra reason to celebrate – the successful completion of the Rotunda’s restoration.
