MP Pushes for Gender Balance in Third-Party Politics

Imagine standing in the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, surrounded by the historic grandeur of the Grandmaster’s Palace and St. George’s Square. Now, picture this: a political scene where every party, big or small, reflects Malta’s gender diversity. This is the vision that Labour MP and Shadow Minister for the Family, Clifton Grima, is pushing for.

What’s the Proposal?

Grima is advocating for a tweak in the law that governs third-party political entities. His proposal? To make it mandatory for these parties to have an equal number of men and women on their executive committees. This move, he believes, will not only promote gender equality but also strengthen democracy.

Why Now?

Malta, known for its progressive stance on gender issues, has made significant strides in women’s empowerment. Yet, when it comes to political representation, there’s still room for improvement. According to Grima, “We’ve seen an increase in women’s participation in politics, but we’re not there yet. This proposal is about accelerating that progress.”

Grima’s proposal comes at a time when third-party entities are gaining traction in Maltese politics. With the upcoming local council elections, several third-party candidates are vying for seats. Grima believes that this is the perfect opportunity to ensure these parties reflect Malta’s gender balance.

“We’re not asking for the impossible,” Grima says. “We’re asking for fairness. We’re asking for balance. And we’re asking for a stronger, more representative democracy.”
