Malta’s Joseph Schirò Takes Helm of Global Map Collectors’ Society

Imagine the thrill of unrolling a centuries-old map, its ink faded by time, yet still revealing secrets of a world long gone. This is the passion that drives Joseph Schirò, a Maltese man who has just been appointed chair of the International Map Collectors’ Society (IMCoS).

From Malta to the World

Schirò, a resident of Birkirkara, has been a dedicated map collector and enthusiast for over two decades. His collection, housed in his home, spans centuries and continents, each map a testament to human history and exploration. Now, his local passion takes a global turn as he steps into the role of IMCoS chair.

The IMCoS, based in London, is a non-profit organisation that promotes the study and preservation of historic maps. With members from over 30 countries, it’s a testament to the universal appeal of cartography. Schirò’s appointment is a nod to Malta’s rich historical and cultural significance, and a recognition of his deep understanding of the subject.

Mapping Malta’s Past

Malta’s strategic location in the Mediterranean has made it a crossroads of civilisations, and this is reflected in its cartographic history. From ancient Roman maps to modern-day charts, Malta’s maps tell a story of conquest, trade, and maritime prowess. Schirò’s collection includes a 1575 map of Malta by Abraham Ortelius, one of the most famous cartographers of his time.

“Malta’s maps are a treasure trove of historical information,” says Schirò. “They’re not just about where things are, but about how people lived, traded, and fought.”

Schirò plans to use his new role to shine a spotlight on Malta’s cartographic heritage. “I want to encourage more people, both locally and internationally, to appreciate and study our maps. They’re a vital part of our cultural heritage.”
