John Cleese Honoured at Golden Bee Awards in Malta
John Cleese Stings Malta with Golden Bee Award
Malta’s cultural scene buzzed with excitement last night as none other than Monty Python’s John Cleese was in town to receive a Golden Bee Award. The prestigious event, held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, honoured local and international figures who have made significant contributions to the arts, culture, and society.
Cleese Takes the Stage
The British comedian, actor, and writer was presented with the award by Malta’s Minister for Tourism and Culture, Clayton Bartolo. Cleese, known for his iconic roles in Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, was recognised for his outstanding contribution to comedy and the performing arts. In true Cleese fashion, he had the audience in stitches with his acceptance speech, quipping about Malta’s unique blend of British and Mediterranean culture.
“I’ve been to Malta many times, but I’ve never seen so many people in one place who can understand my jokes without subtitles!” Cleese joked, referring to Malta’s historical ties with the UK. The audience erupted in laughter, setting the tone for a memorable evening.
Malta’s Own Shine Bright
Cleese was joined by other distinguished winners, including local favourites. Maltese actress and singer Michaela Galea received the award for Best Female Artist, while her counterpart in the male category went to Ivan Grech. The award for Best Album was scooped up by local band Airport Impressions for their release ‘Echo Chamber’.
The Golden Bee Awards also recognised individuals and organisations that have contributed to Malta’s cultural scene behind the scenes. The award for Best Cultural Organisation went to the Malta Arts Council, while the Best Cultural Event was awarded to the Valletta International Arts Festival.
moment, the late Malta-born actor Joe Borg was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. His daughter, Maria Borg, accepted the award on his behalf, paying tribute to her father’s extensive career and his love for Maltese culture.
