Mellieħa Mayor Warns: Imġiebaħ Bay at Risk After Comino Collapse
Mellieħa Mayor Sounds Alarm: Imġiebaħ Bay in Peril After Comino Rock Collapse
Imagine this: you’re sunbathing on the picturesque Imġiebaħ Bay in Mellieħa, the sun is shining, and the sea is calm. Suddenly, a loud rumble echoes across the bay, and a massive chunk of rock from Comino island comes crashing down into the sea. This wasn’t a scene from a disaster movie, but a real event that occurred recently, leaving Mellieħa’s mayor warning of potential danger.
Comino’s Fragile Ecosystem Under Threat
Comino, a small island located between Malta and Gozo, is known for its stunning Blue Lagoon and crystal-clear waters. However, the recent rock collapse has exposed the fragility of its ecosystem and the potential risks it poses to nearby areas like Imġiebaħ Bay. The incident has sparked concern among locals and authorities, with Mellieħa Mayor Sean Debono calling for urgent action.
“We’ve seen an increase in such incidents in recent years,” said Debono. “It’s high time we address this issue seriously. We can’t afford to wait for a tragedy to happen before we act.”
Imġiebaħ Bay: A Popular Spot in Peril
Imġiebaħ Bay, a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling, is now at risk. The recent collapse has caused significant changes in the bay’s seabed, with large boulders scattered around the area. While no immediate danger has been reported, the mayor warns that further collapses could lead to serious consequences.
“We’re advising the public to exercise caution when visiting Imġiebaħ Bay,” said Debono. “We don’t want to cause panic, but we must ensure the safety of our residents and tourists.”
The mayor has called on the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) to assess the situation and take necessary action. He also urged the public to report any unusual activity or changes in the area.
