Pilatus Depositors: The Long Wait for €130M Continues

In the heart of Valletta, outside the Capital Financial Services building, a familiar scene unfolds daily. A group of people, mostly elderly, gather, their faces etched with worry and determination. They are among the thousands of Pilatus Bank depositors still waiting for their €130 million frozen since the bank’s collapse in 2019.

From Promise to Limbo

Three years ago, the Maltese government promised swift action. It set up the Malta Development Bank (MDB) to take over Pilatus’ assets and refund depositors. Yet, here we are, in 2022, and only a fraction of the money has been recovered. The process, once hailed as a model of efficiency, has ground to a halt, leaving depositors in limbo.

Take the case of Maria*, a 72-year-old retiree from Birkirkara. She deposited her life savings, around €50,000, in Pilatus. “I was promised my money back within months,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “Now, they tell me it could take years.”

Claims and Counterclaims

The MDB blames the slow pace on legal complexities and the global financial crisis. It insists it’s doing its best, given the challenging circumstances. But depositors like Maria see little progress. They’ve formed groups, like the Pilatus Depositors Association, to push for their money.

“We’re not asking for a miracle,” says Joseph*, the association’s spokesperson. “We just want what’s rightfully ours. We’ve been patient, but our patience is wearing thin.”

The MDB maintains it’s working tirelessly, pointing to the €30 million it’s managed to refund so far. But with €130 million still frozen, depositors are left wondering if they’ll ever see their money again.

: Hope or Despair?

The future looks bleak for many Pilatus depositors. Some have sold properties, others have taken on extra jobs to make ends meet. But they’re not ready to give up. They’re determined to keep fighting, to keep their voices heard.

“I’ve worked hard all my life,” says Maria. “I deserve to live out my retirement in peace, not in constant worry about how I’ll pay my bills.”

As the sun sets over the Grand Harbour, the depositors outside Capital Financial Services disperse, their day of waiting and hoping over. But their fight is far from done. They’ll be back tomorrow, and the day after that, until they get their money back.
