Outgoing Transport Malta CEO: ‘Don’t Let Anyone Interfere’
As Transport Malta’s CEO, Joseph Bugeja, bid farewell to his post after seven years, he left his staff with a clear message: “Don’t let anyone interfere.” Speaking at a gathering at the Transport Malta headquarters in SmartCity Malta, Bugeja urged his team to stay committed to their vision and not be swayed by external pressures.
Bugeja’s Tenure: A Time of Change
Bugeja’s tenure saw significant changes in Malta’s transport sector. He oversaw the introduction of the Public Transport System, which replaced the old bus routes with a modern, colour-coded network. He also played a crucial role in the development of the Marsa Sportsground, now a hub for local sports enthusiasts.
Navigating Challenges and Criticism
Bugeja’s leadership wasn’t without its challenges. The Public Transport System faced criticism from the public, with complaints about route inefficiencies and overcrowding. Despite this, Bugeja remained steadfast in his vision, “We knew there would be teething problems, but we were committed to improving the system based on feedback,” he said.
Bugeja’s departure comes as the transport sector braces for more changes. The upcoming Bus Interchange project at the former Malta Drydocks site promises to further transform public transport in Malta. As Bugeja steps down, his successor will inherit a sector that’s both dynamic and demanding.
As for Bugeja, he leaves with a simple yet powerful message for his team, “We’ve come this far because we believed in our vision. Don’t let anyone interfere with that.”
