Explosion, Fire at Birkirkara House: What We Know So Far

Smoke Plume Rises Over Birkirkara: Explosion and Fire Engulfs House

Residents of Birkirkara woke up to a startling sight this morning. A massive explosion and subsequent fire engulfed a house in the quiet residential area of Triq il-Kbira, sending a thick plume of smoke into the sky. The blast, heard and felt throughout the neighbourhood, shattered windows and left residents shaken.

Emergency Services Swiftly Deployed

Fire services were swiftly deployed to the scene, with three tenders and an ambulance rushing to the location. Upon arrival, they found the house heavily engulfed in flames, with the explosion having caused significant damage to the structure. Neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precaution, with residents watching the scene unfold from a safe distance.

“We heard a loud bang, like thunder, and then saw the house on fire,” said Maria, a resident of Triq il-Kbira. “It was terrifying. We’re just glad everyone got out safe.”

Investigation Underway

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Early reports suggest it may have been caused by a gas leak, but this has not been confirmed. The house was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the incident, which has been described as a “miracle” by some residents, given the magnitude of the explosion.

Police have cordoned off the area, and forensic experts are currently on site, gathering evidence to determine the cause of the blast. The affected house has been declared unstable, and will likely be demolished in the coming days.

This is not the first time Birkirkara has witnessed such an incident. In 2015, a similar explosion occurred in Triq San Pawl, causing significant damage to nearby properties. However, today’s incident is by far the most severe in recent memory.

Hot Malta will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.

“Our thoughts are with the owners of the house and the entire Birkirkara community,” said a spokesperson for the local council. “We’re doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our residents and restore normality as soon as possible.”
