Turtle Rescued in Little Armier by Life Guards & Nature Trust
Turtle Tale: Rescued in Little Armier
Imagine, if you will, the sun-kissed shores of Little Armier, a tranquil spot on Malta’s north-eastern coast. The sea gently laps against the rocks, and the air is filled with the hum of nature. Suddenly, a cry for help breaks the peaceful scene. It’s not a human in distress, but a creature of the sea – a turtle, struggling in the shallow waters.
This was the dramatic sight that greeted Life Guards and Nature Trust volunteers last week. The distressed turtle, later identified as a Loggerhead, was tangled in fishing nets, fighting to keep its head above water.
Rescue Mission
The Life Guards, on patrol at the time, quickly sprang into action. They waded into the water, carefully approaching the turtle to assess the situation. The Nature Trust volunteers, who had been conducting a beach clean-up nearby, rushed to assist. Together, they worked to free the turtle from the nets, a painstaking process that took over an hour.
“It was a delicate operation,” said Mark, one of the Life Guards involved in the rescue. “We had to be careful not to cause the turtle any more distress. But we were determined to free it, no matter how long it took.”
Local Heroes
Once freed, the turtle was taken to the Malta Maritime Museum for a health check. It was found to be dehydrated and had some minor injuries, but thankfully, it made a full recovery and was released back into the sea a few days later.
This rescue mission is a testament to the dedication of our local heroes. The Life Guards and Nature Trust volunteers are often the first line of defense for our island’s wildlife, working tirelessly to protect and preserve our natural heritage.
But they can’t do it alone. “We need the public’s help,” said Sarah, a Nature Trust volunteer. “If you see any wildlife in distress, please don’t hesitate to call us. And remember, always dispose of your fishing gear responsibly to prevent these incidents from happening.”
So, the next time you’re enjoying the sun and sea at Little Armier, or any of Malta’s beautiful beaches, remember the turtle’s tale. And if you find yourself in a position to help, don’t hesitate. You could be the difference between life and death for one of our island’s most magnificent creatures.
