Pembroke Residents: “We Will Fight This Obscenity” – Football Club Plans Spark Outcry

In the heart of Malta, the quiet residential streets of Pembroke are abuzz with an unusual commotion. The once peaceful neighbourhood, known for its quaint houses and lush greenery, is now echoing with chants of protest. The cause? A proposed football club development that has residents up in arms.

From Quiet Neighbourhood to Football Hub?

The plans, submitted by a local football club, envision transforming a vast tract of land along Triq il-Kunċizzjoni into a state-of-the-art sports complex. The project, if approved, would see the construction of a new stadium, training pitches, and ancillary facilities. While the club argues that this would boost local sports infrastructure and benefit the community, many Pembroke residents beg to differ.

“This is not about being against progress or sports,” says Maria Azzopardi, a long-time Pembroke resident. “But this is our home, our community. We can’t just let it be turned into a concrete jungle.”

Residents’ Concerns: Noise, Traffic, and Loss of Green Space

The proposed development has sparked many concerns among residents. Chief among them is the issue of noise pollution. With the new stadium expected to host matches and events late into the night, many fear that their peaceful neighbourhood will be replaced by a bustling sports hub, complete with blaring music and cheering crowds.

Traffic congestion is another major worry. Triq il-Kunċizzjoni, already a busy thoroughfare, is expected to bear the brunt of the increased traffic generated by the new complex. Residents fear that their once quiet streets will be clogged with cars, making it difficult to navigate the area, especially during peak hours.

Lastly, there’s the issue of green space. Pembroke, with its lush gardens and tree-lined streets, is known for its verdant beauty. The proposed development, however, would see a significant chunk of this green space paved over, much to the dismay of environmentalists and residents alike.

Protests and Petitions: Pembroke Residents Fight Back

In response to these concerns, Pembroke residents have been rallying together, determined to protect their community. Protests have been held, with residents gathering along Triq il-Kunċizzjoni, holding placards and chanting slogans. A petition has also been circulating, gathering signatures from concerned residents and supporters.

“We will fight this obscenity,” says Joseph Portelli, another Pembroke resident. “This is our home, our community. We won’t let it be destroyed in the name of progress.”

The local council, too, has been vocal in its opposition to the plans, with councillors arguing that the development is not in line with the area’s residential zoning and would have a detrimental impact on the community.

What Next?

The plans are currently under consideration by the Planning Authority. While the club has been engaging with residents, attempting to address their concerns, many remain unconvinced. As the process moves forward, one thing is clear: Pembroke residents are not going down without a fight.

“We will continue to protest, to petition, to make our voices heard,” says Azzopardi. “This is our home, and we will fight to protect it.”

how this David and Goliath story plays out. But one thing is certain: the spirit of Pembroke is alive and kicking, ready to defend its community against what it sees as an unjust threat.
