Diver Rescued Off Gozo: A Close Call in Malta’s Waters

In the crystal-clear waters off the coast of Gozo, a dramatic rescue unfolded yesterday, as a local diver found himself in a life-threatening situation. The man, a seasoned diver from Xlendi, was on a routine dive when his regulator malfunctioned, leaving him struggling for breath at a depth of 18 meters.

Struggle for Survival

The diver, who has asked to remain anonymous, was part of a group that had set out from the picturesque Xlendi Bay in the early morning. As they descended into the azure depths, none could have predicted the harrowing ordeal that was about to unfold. With his primary breathing apparatus failing, the diver quickly switched to his octopus, a backup regulator. However, this too proved faulty, leaving him with no immediate means to breathe underwater.

In a desperate bid for survival, the diver signaled to his dive buddy, who was fortunately nearby, alerting him to the emergency. The buddy, acting swiftly and calmly, shared his own regulator, allowing the stricken diver to take crucial breaths as they ascended slowly to the surface.

Rescue from the Sea

Meanwhile, a nearby dive boat, the ‘Seashell’, spotted the distressed divers and quickly maneuvered towards them. The boat’s experienced skipper, Joe Attard, swiftly lowered a ladder into the water, enabling the divers to climb aboard to safety. “It was a tense moment,” Attard recalled, “but thankfully, we were able to reach them in time.”

The rescued diver was immediately administered oxygen and checked for signs of decompression sickness. Miraculously, he showed no adverse effects from the incident. “I’ve been diving for years, but this was by far my closest call,” he admitted, still shaken by the experience.

Safety First: A Reminder for Divers

This near-tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking beneath Malta’s idyllic waters. While diving is a popular and generally safe activity, equipment failure can occur at any time. Regular equipment checks and maintenance are crucial, as is diving with a buddy and staying within your certification limits.

Malta’s dive centers, including those in Gozo, are renowned for their high safety standards. “We always stress the importance of safety to our divers,” said Mark Xuereb, owner of Xlendi Divers. “This incident is a stark reminder that even with the best preparation, things can go wrong. That’s why it’s essential to be prepared and to dive responsibly.”

As the sun set over Xlendi Bay, the diver who had been rescued reflected on his lucky escape. “I’m just grateful to be alive,” he said, “and to the dive community for their quick response and support.”
