Maltese Activists Recall Harrowing Gaza Flotilla Detention
Gaza Flotilla Activists Share Harrowing Detention Accounts
Imagine being detained for weeks, separated from loved ones, and subjected to harsh conditions. This was the reality for several Maltese activists who joined the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in 2018. They recently shared their ordeal with Hot Malta, offering a chilling insight into their Israeli detention.
From Valletta to Gaza
Among the activists was Malte Zimecki, a Maltese-German national who set sail from Valletta’s Grand Harbour. The flotilla aimed to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, carrying humanitarian aid and challenging the embargo’s legality. Little did they know, their journey would take a grim turn.
“We were intercepted by the Israeli navy around 100 nautical miles from Gaza,” Malte recounted. “They boarded our ship, Al Awda, and took us to Ashdod port, where we were arrested and separated.”
Detention in Israel
Malte and his fellow activists were held in the Givon prison, near Ben Gurion Airport. Conditions were harsh. “We were kept in overcrowded cells, with limited access to food, water, and medical care,” Malte revealed. “The psychological pressure was immense. We were constantly interrogated, denied legal representation, and subjected to sleep deprivation.”
Another activist, Claire Solomon, a Maltese-British national, described the isolation. “We were cut off from the world. No phones, no internet, no letters. It was terrifying. We didn’t know what was happening to our friends or the outside world.”
After weeks of detention, the activists were eventually deported. But the ordeal left a lasting impact. “It was inhumane,” Malte summed up. “But it also strengthened our resolve. We’ll continue to advocate for Gaza’s freedom and challenge Israel’s illegal blockade.”
